Piña Colada, the Spanish term for “strained pineapple,” is the national drink in Puerto Rico. The sweet mix of cream of coconut, pineapple juice, ice, and white rum, originated on the Island of San Juan. Puerto Rico is responsible for over 70 percent of the rum sold in the United States. The identity of the person who created the piña colada, perhaps a bartender, or the Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí, remains an unresolved mystery and controversy. But there’s little dispute this tropical delight can keep you cool this summer, in or out of the rain.
